Digital Investigations

In an increasingly digital world, more and more pertinent evidence is being stored in an electronic format. The DFC staff members are trained professionals that use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to ensure that your investigation is completed in a thorough, swift, and cost effective manner.

The DFC offers service to legal professionals, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and private individuals. For more information on a specific service, choose from the options in the Services Menu on the left.

While each individual case is customized through a consultation to meet the needs of the client, the strict forensically process used for all cases is the same.

The Forensic Process

Step 1: Consultation

The client meets with the examiner to discuss the key people involved, the types of media involved, the evidence the client is looking for, and any other unique issues specific to the investigation. Based on the initial discussions, the examiner will explain all available options to the client, recommend a plan of action, provide a timeline for the completion of the work, and provide an estimate for the costs of the services.

Step 2: Acquisition

In preparation for an acquisition, the examiner can assist counsel in constructing effective discovery requests, letters of preservation, and court orders.

The experts at the DFC are trained to handle the acquisition of all types of digital media. This can include any range of devices such as USB thumbdrives and flash drives, hard drives, cell phones, servers, and network storage devices. During the acquisition process, the trained professionals at the DFC will use specialized equipment and procedures to ensure that exact copies of the original evidence are collected in a forensically sound manner that will hold up in court.

Step 3: Analysis

The DFC is equipped with the latest software programs and technologies to process digital evidence. By using techniques such as keyword searching to find pertinent data, and filters to eliminate generic and irrelevant data, the evidence can be processed in the most efficient manner. During this time the examiner will work closely with the client to ensure the best use of time, resources, and funds.

Step 4: Report and Testimony

Based on the client's request, the DFC will produce a professional customized report to explain the findings. Each report includes details of the procedures used in the acquisition and analysis phase in order to validate the evidence.

In cases where the investigation proceeds to a hearing or trial, and a written report is not enough, the DFC can provide expert testimony. The DFC staff is experienced in presenting the digital evidence and technical nuances of an investigation in the most effective and easy to understand way for judges and juries.

In addition to testifying on your behalf, the experts at the DFC can also assist in reviewing the findings of opposing experts and preparing for cross-examination of those experts.
